Friday Afternoon Videos: World Without Tears

Last week, we spotlighted George Clinton, the iFest headliner from this past weekend. So, why not do it again with this weekend’s headliner – Lucinda Williams.

Born in Lake Charles, Lucinda is no stranger to Houston, spending her early years playing at clubs and honky-tonks around the area. Her first album came out 28 years ago, but it wasn’t until the late 80’s when she started to receive critical acclaim and had others singing her songs. In 1994, she won her first Grammy for Country Song of the Year (“Passionate Kisses”) and won again four years later for Best Folk Album with the superb Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

This live clip of “World Without Tears,” the title cut from her 2003 album, displays her great songwriting skills. The lyrics are blunt, even painful at times, but that’s what we love about Lucinda – she offers her true self in song. (He new album, West, was written around the time she was going through relationship troubles and the death of her mother.)

Lucinda plays this Sunday, at 6:15 p.m. at the Houston International Festival, on the Bud Light World Music Stage..
