Yabba dabba doo time is nearly upon us. Time to meet some buddies at the ice house and crack open a cold beer. It's a daily ritual for Houstonist.
During one such ritual, we were greatly disturbed about the amount of consideration that went into someone's order regarding which light beer was the easiest on her waistline. We informed the carb counter that the difference between beverages was not significant unless she was planning to drink a case (more power to her). "You're wrong," came the reply. "The ad says Ultra is better." Ahh, marketing strikes again.
We decided to survey the labels of a view beers being considered by our ad-loving Ultra friend and kick the knowledge to you, our people. Unfortunately our survey methods were flawed. The decision to drink one of each beer being surveyed only resulted in us getting too drunk and losing our cocktail napkin full of data. Fortunately, we consulted the WebOrNet and found the facts consolidated in some nifty tables. Here's what we discovered.
Of the major label light beers, Michelob Ultra and Aspen Edge from Coors come in as the lowest in carbohydrates 2.6 grams, but AE has one less calorie at 94. However, Miller Lite offers more beer flavor and less stomach turmoil than both for only a .6 gram increase in carb. We were most surprised to discover that Budweiser Select was low in both categories at 99 calories and 3.1 grams of carbs. This pales in comparison to Bud Light and Coors Light, or sex in a canoe as well call it around the office, both of which hit triple digit calorie figures at a girdle busting 102 and 110 respectively.
Verdict: Kick back and sip on a Bud Select or a Miller Lite when you hit the ice house and let your friends delude themselves as they drink that other swill.
Have a drink we should spread to the masses? Send it along [jason at houstonist dot com], and we just may post it after some extensive testing.
Don't be a dumbass. Drink responsibly or take a cab.
