A Few Current "Feel Goods"

04302007_helpwanted.jpgLooking for something to do with all that spare time? We know, we don't exactly have much spare time, either. However, there are some great volunteer opportunities available for those of you who are so inclined. First, we'd like to tell you about a long term, or ongoing commitment where there is a need to fill that serves the community by assisting those less privileged. The Christian Community Service Center's Emergency Services Program needs some weekday volunteers for the food pantry and the clothing area. The service is located at 3434 Branard and the needs are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. To volunteer, please e-mail Clare Bruce, Resource Development Coordinator right here, or phone her at 713.961.3993 ext. 211.

Next, we move to Art Car Weekend! The Orange Show is in need of a few good peeps to volunteer for the Main Street Drag and Shop Talk, both are held Friday, May 11th. First, Main Street Drag (no, not that "drag" - think cars) this is a community outreach program that reaches over 30,000 students and patients in one day. Beginning at the Houston Zoo, this mini-parade is a very key element in promoting arts and art cars, by inspiring students to participate in the Art Car Parade (there are over 32 student group entries, and The Orange Show sponsors the Children's Art Car project for those students whose schools don't have a specific program). Volunteers for the Main Street Drag will help line up cars first thing in the morning - say 8:00 ish, and help serve lunch (sandwiches/sodas/etc) around 11:00 a.m. That evening, volunteers are needed for Shop Talk, a "symposium" of sorts featuring films, speakers and performances related specifically to Art Car Artists and furthering this growing genre of mobile art. We will give you the full scoop on Shop Talk next week - it promises to be a fun event!
