Zydeco de Mayo

05042007_bugs.jpgHoustonist has a "new take" on Cinco de Mayo and crawfish to tell you about. Tomorrow at Pico's Mex-Mex, located at 5941 Bellaire Boulevard (between Renwick and Rampart) there will be a Zydeco de Mayo celebration! The party starts at 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and there will be zydeco dancing to the sounds of Ray Ray Chavis and the Zydeco Dots, plenty of boiled crawfish (buy them in advance for $3.50/lb or at the celebration for $4.50/lb. There will be cold beer, some of the finest margaritas in town and tequila specials. If you want to go dance and don't care for the mudbugs, the cuisine is just outstanding.

Houstonist highly recommends the Chiles en Nogado, Chilorio appetizer and the Nachos Jorge. Quite frankly, we have not had a menu item that we found to be "not so much" - it's all very delicious and reasonably priced. Off menu specials to keep your eye out for include the ribs, crawfish enchiladas, cabrito, soft-shell crabs and mole (anything mole). The Margaritas are made with good quality tequilas and orange liqueur's, fresh lime juice and are sweetened with Blue Agave Nectar (no refined sugar and definitely no powdered sweet and sour mix. Order your Margarita "straight up", it's the only way to roll! If you don't make Zydeco de Mayo - go see them the next time you're in the Southwest part of town - the trip is definitely worth it! The prices are reasonable to moderate ("low-teens" for most entrees, and for $7 - $9 for many of the margaritas, you can't really go wrong).
