Interview: Jay Nazz of Reckless Kelly

070510_reckless.jpgIn a perfect world, Reckless Kelly would be huge. Their music is the perfect blend of country and rock, with great melodies. Plus, they put on killer live shows. However, the Austin band doesn't fit neatly into any one radio music format, so they'll continue to be a secret treasure to the thousands of fans they have. (To see how great they are live, check out their new live CD/DVD recorded last year at La Zona Rosa in Austin).

We spoke to Jay Nazz, drummer for Reckless Kelly, as he prepared for this Sautrday night's concert in Conroe at the historic Crighton Theatre.

Let me see if I have this right: a little over 10 years together, 4 studio albums, 2 live albums, and a live DVD?

Yes.

Which album is your favorite?

Millican
(our first album) and the new live album, Reckless Kelly Was Here.

You're known for your rocking live shows – when you play outside of Texas, are people surprised that you're more rock than country?

It really depends where we are. Some places are more familiar with Texas country so they are a little more prepared for it. When we are in front of a new audience it’s kind of like putting something in their drink. They may not taste anything weird, but it's gonna knock them out.

You're playing with Joe Ely Saturday night. Have you've done a show with him before?

We've opened up shows for Joe several times and recorded a Randy Newman track in the studio. This is the first time we will be performing with him as his band.

070510_jay.jpgWho are some newer Texas musicians/bands that you like?

I like a band called the Heathens a lot. They are pretty new to the scene but I think they have a lot to contribute.

We loved the mini-dice in the spine of the Wicked Twisted Road CD. What kind of beer games will we be able to play with your next studio CD?

That was something Willy [Braun] came up with. These days, it's so easy for people to download albums that they don't buy the actual record anymore – which is a shame because the album artwork has a lot to do with the album as a complete work. So we had someone help design a game board that would give fans a reason to go and buy the album as a whole. We have the tendency to include drinking in everything we do so that and the game board were a natural fit. As for as future beer games, we'll probably play a little game we like to call, drinking in the studio while recording our next record.

Speaking of the next studio album, we still love Wicked Twisted Road, but when can expect a new studio album?

We are currently writing and recording demos to pick songs for the next album. That’s the next step before going into the studio and making the next record. Hopefully we'll get everything lined up to record sometime after the summer.

If you could be any Texas landmark, what would it be?

The Texas state capitol
