In case you've forgotten — or didn't know — Houstonist will be hosting our first-ever photo exhibition, 600 sq mi: Photos from Houston, this fall. So this is a reminder that you have three weeks left to get your photos submitted for consideration for the show. The deadline is Friday, June 1, and the entry form and all the details about the show are at the 600 sq mi website. Check it out and let us see your photos! (And remember: This show is open to all photographers, amateur and professional, and everyone will have the same shot at getting in, so don't be shy about entering.)

Missed Connections: Gefilte Fish...and "Chain Connections"

Hey guys, I've got a question. I read the following on the 600 sq mi website: "Who can enter the show?
Any photographer, amateur or professional. Jurors will consider all photos submitted anonymously, so all photos will be judged equally, without any consideration of the photographer's background. We're hoping to see work from both established and new talent, so don't be shy about submitting your photos."
Here's what bothers me: I'm a self-taught amateur. I take some cool pictures now and then, but I'm definitely an amateur. If the jurors don't know our backgrounds, aren't most of the pictures chosen naturally going to be from the people who do this sort of thing for a living? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just honestly curious. It seems to me like it's not really a level playing field...
Well, the jurors will be judging the photos based only on the photos themselves, which we think is the most level playing field we can offer. A lot of people who consider themselves amateurs honestly take better pictures than people who consider themselves professionals, we think.
