Cameras, cameras everywhere

The Chronicle's Matt Stiles brings us the locations of the city's 10 newest red-light cameras, a couple of which we had already noticed — while lawfully stopping at red lights, we might add. And here they are:

  • Northbound Wayside at Gulf Freeway
  • Northbound Woodridge at Gulf Freeway
  • Northbound West Bellfort at Southwest Freeway
  • Northbound Fairbanks N. Houston at Northwest Freeway
  • Northbound West Sam Houston Parkway South at Westpark
  • Eastbound FM 2351 at Gulf Freeway
  • Eastbound South Post Oak Boulevard at West Loop South
  • Northbound Northwest Freeway at Mangum
  • Westbound South Sam Houston Parkway East at Telephone
  • Southbound Stella Link at South Loop West

And there's a map of all the camera locations here, along with information on the camera system.

In other camera news, the Chron reports that HPD is moving ahead with a plan to install more than a dozen closed-circuit surveillance cameras across the city in hopes that they'll help curb crime and illegal dumping. Four of the cameras could be in place along Main Street in the Market Square area — where there are used to be a bunch of nightclubs and bars — within weeks. "What I'm hoping is to have some behavior modifications, in terms of giving the public an expectation that the police are there, or at least watching to some extent the activity in these public venues," HPD Executive Assistant Chief Martha Montalvo said. The downtown cameras were purchased by the Downtown Management District, but will be installed and maintained by HPD.
