What's in store for the brain this week? Photography and politics join forces this Thursday when the American Leadership Forum of Houston presents a lecture program entitled, Civil Liberties and Guantanamo. If your brain tickles at the thought of debating the failures of the Geneva Convention, or if you never figured out what the big deal about Guantanamo was anyway, then this event is for you.

Thursday's lecture will be led by University of Houston Law Professor, Jordan Paust, and University of Texas Law Assistant Professor, Scott Sullivan. Both Paust and Sullivan are international human rights legal experts, and Sullivan has been involved with the representation of Guantanamo detainees.
This Scholarly Pursuit is being held in conjunction with a FotoFest, Inc. exhibition entitled, Guantanamo: Pictures from Home, Questions of Justice. Fotofest has extended the run of this exhibition, which will now close June 2, 2007. Even if you don't make the lecture, the Guantanamo exhibition can be viewed at Fotofest's headquarters Monday through Saturday until 5PM, and admission is free. As far as the lecture goes, there should be plenty of visual accompaniment to keep you awake, if you were worried.
So get out and get thinking. At the very least now you'll have an excuse to take that cutie out to coffee after the lecture is finished. Houstonist knows that scholarly pursuits are always made even sexier by post-event espresso and biscotti, and Thursday is no exception. So ponder that, smartypants, and make a date!
