Roy Morales in hot water over campaign debts

052307_morales.jpgCity Council candidate Roy Morales probably has more important things to do than deal with a signmaker who has accused him of not paying $1,000 he owed for signs made during the 2005 election. The printer, Michael Franks, says that Morales also owes him $4,000 from this year's election.

Morales didn't deny that he owed Franks the money. The Morales campaign told ABC's Miya Shay that they were working out a payment plan with the vendor. They told the Chron's Matt Stiles that they were uncertain if they could use money raised during this election to pay debts owed from 2005. Miya Shay has also uploaded some documents pertinent to the lawsuit. Franks has not talked to reporters, but Morales had some choice words to say about him:

It appears that we have a disgruntled vendor that is apparently jealous of another vendor in town. He felt that there was an agreement, and there was no agreement.

Morales is already facing an uphill battle in his bid to beat Melissa Noriega in a June 16 runoff. She came in just short of the majority needed to win the election, with Morales trailing at around 20%. We're sure that a lawsuit isn't exactly the kind of press Morales was hoping for to give him the leg up on Noriega, the clear favorite.

That's not true.

Miya Shay contacted Franks and posts about it here.

Thanks, Kevin. My information was based on Matt's most recent blog entry, in which he said that Franks declined to comment.
