Morning Roundup: Looking for a sign edition

Good morning, Houston. If you've ever dreamed of designing a neighborhood marker, now's your chance: The Sixth Ward Property Owners group is looking for someone to come up with a sign to mark the historic area. "Right now we have markers in the neighborhood and they're in bad shape," Maria Isabel of the SWPO said. "It would be great to redo those." The design specs seem pretty open — the location and materials are up to the designers — but whoever designs the sign should figure out how much it'll cost to build, Isabel said. The deadline for entries is June 7.

>> Shooting in northwest Houston: Police are still piecing together information about a teenager who died on a woman's doorstep Monday night after being shot. Witnesses said they heard several shots and screams around 9:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Grow Lane; shortly afterward, 18-year-old Derek Prudhomme, who had been shot, collapsed and died on a woman's doorstep. Police say they don't think robbery was a motive for the killing, but they're really not sure exactly what happened: "We do not have a motive or suspects at this time," Detective Mark Newcomb told KPRC. "We're trying to locate additional witnesses who might have seen what happened."

>> Biodiesel on the island: A plant set to produce 20 million gallons of soybean-based fuel this year has opened in Galveston — but almost all the fuel will be shipped overseas. Though experts say biodiesel has a higher energy content and provides better gas mileage than traditional fuel, it produces between 10 and 25 percent more nitrogen oxide — which has led it to be banned in high fuel blends along the Gulf Coast. "We are still in the early days for biofuels in the United States and largely they are mandate-driven," Rick Zalesky of Chevron Biofuels, a partner in the venture, told KHOU. But a bit of the biodiesel will stay here: The city of Galveston has agreed to buy 50,000 gallons of it to blend into fuel for city trucks.

>> Today's weather: Look for clouds, heat, humidity and a chance of rain — in short, early summer. We should have a high around 88 this afternoon followed by an overnight low in the lower 70s, with a 20 percent chance of showers all day. On the plus side, the sun may come out this weekend — so hang on.

In the meantime, spread a little sunshine around with the rest of this morning's news ...
