Police looking for clues in East Loop shooting

060807_berdegues.jpgPolice are still trying to piece together the events that led to a shooting on the East Loop yesterday morning, possibly the result of a case of road rage. The victim was 47-year-old Carlos Berdegues, who was found slumped over in his truck after the vehicle crashed into a roadside wall near Market Street between 6 and 7 a.m. Witnesses saw the truck weaving in traffic before it hit the wall, and that — not a possible shooter — held their attention. "They saw the truck, they didn't see anything else because that's what caught their attention, was the truck that bounced off the wall," HPD Sgt. Bobby Roberts told KTRK. "So, they were focusing on the truck, watching it, thinking the guy might have been intoxicated because it was weaving and then the truck just came to a rest."

Turns out Berdegues had been shot in the chest, apparently through the passenger's side window, which was shattered. Investigators are now trying to figure out exactly where Berdegues was shot, and whether the incident was random or intentional. They're asking area businesses to check their surveillance tapes and are reviewing TranStar camera footage to see if anything shows up. In the meantime, Berdegues' wife, Darlene, is left trying to explain the situation to her kids. "I just thought I would tell them exactly what happened and that a bad man shot daddy and that bad people shoot good people,” she told KHOU.

Police say the shooting might have been the result of road rage, and they're asking anyone with information to call HPD at 713.308.3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713.222.TIPS.
