Saturday shelterporn

In all these months of shelterporn, we've somehow managed to overlook one of our favorite neighborhoods in Houston: Eastwood, an area that's chockablock with bungalows and Arts & Crafts-style houses, many of which have been beautifully restored. Take, for example, this 1914 home on Walker Avenue, on a corner lot just a couple miles east of downtown.

The house has high ceilings and original woodwork throughout, with marble fireplace surrounds and hardwood floors inlaid with mahogany. There are lots of windows — including big bay windows in the living room and one of the bedrooms — and a sunroom off the master bedroom that could be used as a kids' room. The kitchen was remodeled a few years ago and doesn't have acres of counter space, but it does have an island with a sink and a spiral staircase that leads up to a loft/attic area. There's just one bathroom, like you find in a lot of older houses, but it has a lot of character, with stained glass, a hex-tile floor and a claw-foot tub. A wraparound porch overlooks the large lawn, and the breakfast nook opens onto a large deck on the side of the house.

Granted, this isn't a big house, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character — it has those features you'll never find in a newer house, and from what we've seen, Eastwood is only getting better. Bedrooms: two or three. Bathrooms: one. Square feet: 1,517. Price: $229,900.
