Morning Roundup: Mele kalikimaka edition

061107_hawaiian.jpgGood morning, Houston. If you need another reason to wish you were in Hawaii right now, today is a public holiday in the Aloha State. Specifically, it's Kamehameha Day and the Hawaiians are celebrating the monarch who first ruled over a unified Hawaii. Interestingly, this is the only American holiday that honors a monarch. Hawaiian officials have been hard at work planning events and floral parades on each of the islands, as well as an evening draping ceremony in which the Kamehameha Statue in downtown Honolulu is draped with long leis. And over here we're worried about our trash pick-up days changing.

>> Craig Biggio: the man, the legend, the ad campaign: We don't know about you, but we've been getting excited every time Craig Biggio comes up to bat. With only 20 hits left after a lead-off home run against the White Sox, it looks like we're not the only ones. FSN has designed an ad campaign around Biggio's 3000 chase. The campaign is valued at more than $200,00 and is unique because it focuses on a single player and not an entire team. It includes countdown billboards set up Friday at Highway 59 and Polk, Interstate 45 South and Fannin, I-10 West at Silber and West Loop 610 and Westview; two countdown banners at Minute Maid Park and spots at local movie theatres.

>> Texas lottery woes: Who's buying lottery tickets? Apparently, not the people you'd expect. According to the Chronicle, many of the poorest ZIP codes in Texas spend the most on expensive lottery tickets. Per-capita spending on the most expensive lotto tickets was $25 in the 10 poorest ZIP codes versus $18 in the 10 wealthiest. Some people have expressed concern over the state's promotion of gambling, especially since we're spending a grand total of zero dollars on programs for problem gamblers.

>> Today's weather: Temperatures will reach 93 today with a low of 72. The sun is shining all around, it warms your hearts and melts the clouds. Until the evening that is, when there's a minor chance of scattered thunderstorms.

Hey, you, with the pretty face - check out these headlines...
