Old is New: Opening Night Reception

Opening tonight, Thursday, June 14, 2007 and running through July 26th, Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) offers Houstonians a fresh look at some old artistic techniques in space125gallery with its exhibition, Old is New, featuring the work of HAA Fellowship artists Catherine Colangelo, Anthony Thompson Shumante and Robbie Austin.

In a nod to art’s history, Old Is New explores innovative ways of presenting old techniques and themes — transforming traditional into modern with the stroke of the brush or the placement of shadow and light.

Colangelo presents an illuminated manuscript modeled after those popular in medieval times. Transforming the ancient art form of stained glass into modern art is exhibited through Shumante’s work. And 1950s and 1970s yearbooks come to life when they form the basis of artwork from Robbie Austin.

“This exhibit demonstrates the vital roles ancient and historic artistic techniques can play in contemporary art,” said HAA Interim Executive Director, Joe Wilson.

“For example, stained glass, a timeless medium utilized in cathedrals throughout the world, yet manipulated by Shumante, shows the same historical technique in a very modern and commercial way. The juxtaposition and creativity of his pieces is remarkable.”

HAA will host an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for patrons, the arts community, participating artists, HAA board members and public.
