Juneteenth Celebration at Miller Outdoor Theater
Happy Juneteenth! Join the city in celebrating the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation when slavery in Texas offically became a thing of the past.
Tonight, Miller Outdoor Theater presents “Sarah and Joshua – a Juneteenth Musical” – the premiere of a new musical drama by Texas Southern University playwright Thomas Meloncon in commemoration of Juneteenth.
The play tells the story of two slaves in love and the events leading up to June 19, 1865. Sarah and Joshua are two young Louisiana plantation slaves who fall in love at a time of great suffering and uncertainty. The plantation slaves dream of better times ahead with the election of Abraham Lincoln, whom they call "Mr. Freedom", and the abolition of slavery. But when the Civil War erupts and as the Union soldiers advance, the plantation owner abandons his land and takes Sarah with him. An anguished Joshua joins the Union army to fight for freedom and for the hope of finding Sarah.
