Menil Homecoming

As you may already know, the de Menils had one of the best modern art collections of the twentieth century, and Houston is lucky enough to get to see the work regularly, for free, at the museum they built for it.

However, you may not have known that the de Menils were also generous enough to give away dozens of pieces to major art institutions all over the world.

Now, in celebration of the Menil Collection's 20th anniversary, forty five of these pieces have come home and are now on view. Works by Lee Bontecou, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Claes Oldenburg, Jackson Pollock, Man Ray, Larry Rivers, Mark Rothko, Jean Tinguely and Andy Warhol, as well as selections of African, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian art make up the exhibition.

What: A Modern Patronage: de Menil Gifts to American and European Institutions
Where: The Menil Collection, 1515 Sul Ross
When: Now until September 16th, 2007
Cost: Free!
