It seems just yesterday that a falling concrete beam took a bite out of a concrete wall on the Sam Houston Tollway at its interchange with the Katy Freeway. And now the same thing has happened again, more or less — except this time it was a piece of construction debris, and it landed on a passing motorist's car.
That motorist, Terry Burgess, told KHOU how he was driving along the eastbound Katy Freeway feeder last Tuesday night when the debris crashed on the roof of his minivan, shattering his sunroof. “I jumped," Burgess said. "The car swerved. There was a car behind and it swerved. At that point glass started falling on my head." Burgess said he pulled over and called 911, but the police never showed up; the next day, he called TxDOT and was told to report the incident to the construction company in charge. And though Burgess said he did so, he said no one has returned his call. "I was upset no one came out, and everyone is playing it down like it's not important," he said.
Tanya McWashington of the Katy Freeway expansion project said there was no record of a complaint from Burgess, and she noted that roads are closed when major construction projects are taking place along the Katy corridor. Still, Burgess said motorists should be careful in the area: "There's a lot of danger, a lot of concern that should be placed in these areas," he told Channel 11.
