A reader e-mailed us because he was upset that we didn't have a shelterporn last week — more specifically because we missed the chance to feature the West Mansion, which was sold a few days ago to a real estate development firm that plans to preserve the historic house. And yes, we did drop the ball on that one, we suppose. But don't worry: Here's an even larger house for your consideration, and unlike the West Mansion, there's no chance that it will end up being surrounded by a retirement community (unless, of course, you build one yourself).
The five-year-old Piney Point manse is enormous — more than 21,000 square feet — and features enough bedrooms and baths to easily accommodate the entire population of Wyoming, should you ever decide to invite them down for the weekend. The Realtor's listing describes the style of the house as "European-inspired," with interiors that feature "antique European and South American architectural elements." We can kind of see that: There's a lot of marble, a lot of columns, a great deal of wood paneling and heavy draperies. Overall, the effect seems more Las Vegas than Old World, but who are we to judge? Inside, the ground floor plan is definitely built for entertaining on a grand scale: There's a 40-foot-long bar and wine room, an approximately 1,200-square-foot living room with a 19-foot ceiling, an enormous dining room with mirrored walls and richly detailed plasterwork (served by its own catering kitchen), and a kitchen/breakfast room/family room area that's approximately the size of Luxembourg. It all opens, via a series of French doors and folding glass walls, onto a huge paved terrace that overlooks the back yard — and yes, there's a pool and outdoor kitchen, and the 43-foot-long garage converts into a reception space (with polished granite floor) if you need it.
The second floor contains a few bedrooms, including the barrel-vaulted master (which leads to vast his-and-hers closets and an equally grand bathroom with its own terrace) and a two-level guest suite that comes with its own sitting room and private balcony. On the third floor is a hobby room, a nearly 2,000-square-foot game room complete with its own model train circling a ceiling-level track, and a home theater that appears to come equipped with two giant Oscar statues. There are also two separate servants' quarters in the house, because God knows you'll need a small army just to vacuum the place.
Elegant? Eh, that depends on your taste. Subtle? Decidedly not. Big? Absolutely. Bedrooms: eight. Bathrooms: 10 full and three half. Square feet: 21,240. Price: $19.9 million.
