Coca-Cola Bottling Plant (1929-2007)

Houston has lost the 1929 Coca-Cola Bottling Plant (Pringle & Smith and Alfred C. Finn, architects), located on the east side of downtown at 2600 Capitol. The building was most recently occupied by Leggett's Fabrics, which relocated to Fort Bend County in 2005. The area is being redeveloped from industrial to residential, and there is a sign on the corner indicates that the new development will be called "Capitol Oaks Two," a supplement to In-Town Homes' Capitol Oaks. We're just glad they are not a continuation of Waterhill's homes across the street (700 block of Live Oak).

The Coca-Cola Bottling Plant remained at the Capitol St. location until 1950, just in time for the June opening of the new facility at 2800 Bissonnet. which was advertised as "the world's most modern Coca-Cola plant."

Houston's first Coca-Cola Bottling Company was located at 2009 Washington Ave., and in 2003 a historical marker was placed in the location. It opened in 1902, and was one of the first franchises for Coca-Cola bottle distribution. By 1915, the facility moved down the road to a larger building at 1212 Washington Ave. (near the Washington/Preston split).

It's too bad that this building, which would have been perfect for a real live loft conversion, is being demolished to make way for crappy townhomes. (The development is apparently going to be similar to the one in the 2800 block of Clinton Drive — it's a little more interesting than the horrible townhomes across the street from Coca-Cola, but only a little.)

you're right jim. this type of redevelopment is so typical of houston. get rid of the old and make way for the new.

i'm no civil engineer, but it seems like revitalizing the old would be more cost effective and environmentally friendly than demolition, not to mention more interesting for the eye. i hate to think of what the houston is going to look like 15 years from now...only new "hot" developments with no shread of history left.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE HORROR , THE HORROR (sorry apocalypse now

I AGREE FULLY WITH THE OTHER 2 COMMENTS. SAD THING IS...A FEW YEARS FROM NOW THEY WILL BE BUILDING LOFTS NEXT DOOR & WILL WANT A RETRO-INDUSTRIAL LOOK - LIKE AN OLD COCA-COLA PLANT.

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT HOUSTON IS THAT MONEY & TASTE ARE STRANGERS.
