State rep. shoots would-be burglar

070907_borris2.gifHouston State Rep. Borris Miles of District 146, used a pistol to shoot one of two men whom he says were trying to steal materials from the house he is building. The man was wounded in the leg, but it was not life-threatening.

The incident took place yesterday evening at the construction site for his new home at 3742 MacGregor Way. Rep. Miles was reportedly repairing a leak at the new home when he heard a noise outside. When he went to investigate it, two men were apparently trying to steal copper wiring or piping, and one of the suspects threw a knife at him, according to HPD. Miles shot one of the potential thieves, but the other got away on foot. The wounded suspect was taken to Ben Taub this morning and are still working to identify the one who got away.

Rep. Miles is a former law enforcement officer and is licensed to carry a concealed handgun. He said that previously when he had been working on the house, he had heard suspicious noises in the area, so he had his gun with him. No charges have been filed in the case.
