Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor Polar Bear in a Snowstorm.
Check out the smoothness of the water in this image of the Gus S. Wortham Memorial Fountain. Do you know who Mr. Wortham was and how important he was to our fair city? Honestly, we didn't until we did a little searching. According to the New York Times, Mr. Wortham was "a cattle baron and an insurance tycoon." But he was much more than that to Houston. He was a prosperous man who's love for the arts and green space gave us such places as Gus Wortham Park, Gus Wortham Memorial Fountain (pictured above), Wortham Fountain at Texas Medical Center, Wortham House which is the residence for the chancellor of the University of Houston, Wortham World of Primates at the Houston Zoo, Wortham IMAX Theater at the HMNS, Wortham Tower in the American General Center and let's not forget The Wortham Theater Center which hosts the Houston Grand Opera and The Houston Ballet. He was also instrumental in helping construct the football stadium at Rice as well as The Astrodome.
