Three Days of Houston Roller Derby Action

07122007_hrd.jpgBeginning tomorrow, the ladies of the Houston Roller Derby will be busy, busy!!! Now, to keep the action moving, these ladies practice quite often (we think it's like three or four times per week, we are not certain - don't quote us on that!), but, they are gearing up to give Houston some love! Beginning tomorrow at 8:30 in the a.m. the ladies will be accepting donations/non-perishables at the Kroger at Buffalo Speedway and Westpark as part of the Houston Food Bank Food Drive. Donate dollars to the HRD and non-perishables to the Houston Food Bank, or however you so choose (see, these ladies never quit giving to the community and to charitable causes - they ROCK). Bonus, if you make a $50 donation, or more - more is always good, you will get two tickets to Sunday's bout (while supplies last). Also, there is a possibility, rumor has it, that the HRD food drive will be on Great Day Houston - remember, it's third-hand hearsay, so we won't guarantee anything (set the DVR).

Second, on Saturday, July 14th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Shelley Calton will be exhibiting some fabulous black & white original photography of the Houston Roller Derby girls in action. This will be at the Watermark Gallery, located at 3503 Lake Street. See, all this action and philanthropy and culture, too - what's not to dig?

Last, and this is really the piece de resistance, the coup de gras, the big kahuna of the weekend! "In Quad We Trust" @ The Verizon Wireless Theater, located at 520 Texas Avenue. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the action commences at 6:00 p.m.!!! The action just gets better and better folks and this week, the 2006 Champion Psych Ward Sirens will be taking on the rookie-led Burlesque Brawlers, following which the undefeated Bayou City Bosses will be battling the Machete Betties. Half-time entertainment will be provided by Mahalla Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and the after party will be held at Chances. Proceeds from this bout benefit the Houston Humane Society.

We'll flog the dead horse again, just for the audience at home: No children under twelve on the front row or sitting on the floor in the first couple rows (flying skates and bodies, tiny child - you do the math!!!!). No beer, soda or water or liquids on the floor - you see someone coming, raise your drink and play "save the high dollar arena beer/coke/water". Lastly, have fun and don't forget to holler, cheer and jeer (name calling and fan lunacy in the cheering department are highly encouraged).

Hit all of the events, support these ladies!!!!! They do this for the love of the sport, because there's no paycheck or reimbursement for equipment involved!
