Morning Roundup: A slight gas problem edition

Good morning, Houston. If you happened to be in the Medical Center yesterday afternoon, we're pretty sure you noticed the natural gas leak. Even if you didn't see it, chances are you got caught in the massive traffic snarls it created after Main Street was closed between University and Sunset. Officials with The Methodist Hospital said a construction crew accidentally broke the gas line around noon, and it took most of the day to get the leak fixed — but the good news is that things should be back to normal today. Just look out for the stray current!

>> Watch for falling poles: In Brazoria, a 9-year-old boy was injured Thursday morning when a wooden utility pole fell on him. It happened as crews from Texas-New Mexico Power were disconnecting power to a nearby home — apparently, the cable from the house to the pole was the only thing holding the pole up, and when the cable was disconnected, the pole fell. Fortunately, KTRK reports that the boy was alert after the accident, which hurt his hip and leg.

>> CPS closes probe into 'ecstasy' video: Child Protective Services has ended its investigation into the video that seemed to show a 2-year-old girl who had been given the drug ecstasy, saying a drug test showed no trace of the substance in the girl's body. The video showed the girl sitting on the floorboard of a van, rolling her eyes and appearing unresponsive when the van's passengers slapped, pinched and poked her. The people in the video told police that the whole thing was a hoax, and apparently they were telling the truth: The Harris County sheriff's office also said it has closed its investigation and won't file any charges.

>> This weekend's weather: Looks like another nice, if hot, day today: Expect an afternoon high of 96 with a heat index up to 105 under mostly sunny skies. Tonight, a few clouds could drift in as the temperature drops into the upper 70s, and look for a chance of rain and highs around 90 on Saturday and Sunday.

Re: ecstasy video
It may have been a hoax, but it still looks like a little girl was slapped, pinched, and poked while sitting in a floorboard of a van. What a nice prank.

I guess car seats for the toddler and infant in the "ecstasy hoax" were not necessary. How unfortunate they were not punished for that little oversight.

According to the interview with the mother on KPRC, her child learned how to roll her eyes back like that because of the movie Grudge II - another good bit of parenting by this person.
