Police: Sunday missing child alert was a hoax

071607_amber.jpgWe noticed a news story yesterday afternoon about a 5-year-old boy who was reportedly in a woman's car when it was stolen from a north Houston gas station — but it turns out that the woman's report was totally fabricated, and now she may face misdemeanor charges.

Marissa Aguillar, 29, initially reported that her son, Jordan Rodriguez, was in her gold Chevrolet Impala that was stolen while she was getting gas at the Exxon station at Tidwell and Interstate 45 North. An Amber Alert was issued for the child.

"We followed the Amber Alert guidelines, which require some type of evidence — in this case the mother claiming that her child had been taken," said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon. "We thankfully found out that the story wasn't true. The mother is fine, the child is fine."

Jordan Aguilar was found at about 6 p.m. at his grandmother's house, KPRC reports. Police also found the car that Marissa Aguilar reported stolen, and they concluded that nothing she had said was true — which leaves us wondering exactly why someone would make a completely false report like that. Attention, maybe? She got it.

Marissa Aguilar was taken to Doctors Hospital for observation, and police said they will continue to investigate the incident. Cannon told the Chronicle that there's a "good possibility" she will face charges.
