MFA's Artful Thursday: Shakespeare's Friends, The Illustrated Version
Lecture by Kate Emery Pogue
Timed oh so conveniently with next week's start of the Houston Shakespeare Festival, the MFA welcomes Kate Emery Pogue, playwright, Shakespearean actress, teacher, producer, and director for a discussion and story telling based on her book, Shakespeare's Friends . Founder of the Drama Department at Houston Community College Central Campus and former Artistic Director of the Shakespeare-by-the-Book Festival, she is the author of Shakespeare´s Friends, 2006, and currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Drama at the University of Houston Downtown.
Shakespeare (1564-1616), more than any other writer in the western world, based much of his work on the consequences of friendship. Given the value placed on friends in his writing, many readers have wondered about the role friendship plays in Shakespeare´s own life.
At the July Artful Thursday, Kate Pogue, author of Shakespeare´s Friends, brings the world of Elizabethan England to life through the stories of Shakespeare´s friends and acquaintances.
Her talk will be richly illustrated with portraits of actors, writers, aristocrats, kings, and commoners drawn from The National Portrait Gallery, London, The Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the MFAH that highlight the between Shakespeare and these wonderful collections.
Refreshments are generously provided by Starbucks.
