The Museum of Fine Arts is opening a huge contemporary show this Sunday called Red Hot: Asian Art Today, all from the private collection of the Chaney family. This is big news not only because contemporary Asian art is (as the title suggests) about the hottest thing going, but also because seven other galleries in Houston are presenting contemporary Asian art *at the same time.* In combination, this is probably the largest collection of contemporary Asian art the country has ever seen.
The work is fantastic.
And it's in your back yard.
Here's a rundown of the galleries and their openings:
China Under Construction at Deborah Colton Gallery, opened July 14th
Weihong/Huang Yan/Li Wei at Barbara Davis Gallery, opened July 14th
!CHINA NOW! at McClain Gallery, opened July 14th
New China at New Gallery/Thom Andriola, opened July 14th
Kyomei: Resonance at Poissant Gallery, opened July 13th
To the Left at CTRL Gallery, opening Saturday July 21st
Dreaming, Faraway at Inman Gallery, opening Sunday July 22nd
The galleries are all free to attend; the MFAH has an admission fee except on Thursdays. Go, go, go!
