As part of a way to get some international exposure (and perhaps credibility), the MLS has introduced the North American SuperLiga Tournament this year. This is a competition between 4 MLS teams and 4 teams in Mexico’s Primera División. The 4 MLS teams were selected by invitation this year, but in the future tournaments they will be selected based on the top 4 teams during regular season play. The Houston Dynamo, along with DC United make-up the MLS teams in Group B who take on Mexico’s Club America and CA Morelia. The two top finishers of this Group will go on to the Semi-Finals against the Group A winners (August 14th and 15th). The MLS teams for Group A include the newly Beckham-nized LA Galaxy and FC Dallas (For those non-critical thinkers, this could mean that David Beckham could make an appearance in Houston before Oct. 7, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves). The prize for the overall tournament winner is $1 million…new stadium money anyone.
The Dynamo, who take on Club America tonight, are currently the top team in the MLS and are going on an 11-game unbeaten streak. Although the kickoff is not until 9pm, we expect a bunch of crazy supporters for both clubs to be in attendance.
Lets go Dynamo!
