Weekend concert picks

With all of the rain we’ve been having, it’d be nice to just sit (or stand) indoors somewhere and enjoy some good music. So, that’s what Houstonist is going to do. Many good choices for this weekend – here are our picks:

Jazz comes to Fitzgerald’s tonight. However, this isn’t your grandfather’s jazz. One of our local favorites, Drop Trio (pictured on the left), will be joining headliner O’2L (which features a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and a Megadeath guitarist, go figure). Definitely the best ticket in town. [tickets]

We’re recommending this show more for its entertainment value, not quality of music. Disco lived in the clubs in the late 70’s, died a quick death by the early 80’s, but has been revived now in the concert arena. Billed as the Solid Gold Dance Party (probably similar to this Solid Gold), the show at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion features KC & the Sunshine Band, The Village People, A Taste of Honey, Peaches & Herb, plus more. Sunday
The show of the weekend belongs to the Houston Press Music Awards Showcase (that's their cartoon alien on the right). For only $10, you can wander through different venues around downtown and catch over 50 local bands and musicians, of all genres, who have been nominated for this year’s Houston Press Music Awards. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. Here’s a complete schedule. [ticket information]
