Tossed is a New York based fast casual rabbit food salad eatery on the west side of town. Having only been open in Houston for a couple of weeks, and despite the awkward name, there was quite a big crowd at Tossed when we tried it out for lunch recently. Located in an odd shaped shopping center at Briar Forest and Eldridge Parkway, we couldn’t help but wonder if this location would have any resemblance, in style or taste, to the acclaimed NYC location.
While deciding what to order we were able see at the fresh ingredients (through Plexiglas). The menu seemed a little overwhelming at first, but the staff was friendly enough to help out when we had questions. The first part of the menu includes “Pre-Designed” salads (Chef Salad, Caesar Salad, etc…), which can be modified to your liking. The next part of the menu contains over 70 individual ingredients for “Customer Created” salads, including some unique items such as Jicama, Plantain Chips, and Coconut. You can choose as many ingredients as you want, but it is going to cost you - Each ingredient has a price next to it on the menu. In addition to the toss-ins (no pun intended…alright maybe a little) there are over 20 dressings…we nearly had a panic attack as we made it up to order. Note: There are also Soups, Sandwiches, Crepes, Smoothies, and Desserts – but we came for the salad, after all we are trying to be healthier.
More Field Greens after the jump…
Since we were in a South-Western type of mood, we decided to “Create Our Own” salad, since there was nothing quite to our taste on the “Pre-Designed” menu. We chose Spinach ($3.95) as the base with Roasted Corn ($0.50), Black Bean Salsa ($0.75), Fresh Peppers ($1.00), Chopped Tomatoes ($0.50), Avacado ($1.25) and Blackened Chicken ($1.95)...hungry yet? To top it off we had the Citrus Chipotle Dressing (on the side). The grand total for this masterpiece, just over $10! Ouch this better be one Big Salad.
Behind the counter there is a flurry of activity with “chefs” preparing the salads & sandwiches and the noise in the restaurant resembles the same. While we waited for our salad to be delivered to the table we couldn’t help but notice the amount of people waiting for their food…we can’t imagine this working in Manhattan, but perhaps this franchise location still has a few kinks to work out.
Our salad finally arrived, after about 15 minutes, and to be honest we were a little disappointed with the size of our creation. Although there was plenty of food for us, for the $10 price tag we were expecting a Texas-sized portion. All the expenses aside, the spinach was crisp the ingredients of the salad were fresh and the chicken was well seasoned although a little cold. The salad dressing was also very fresh and had a great flavor to accent our greens. While we recommend Tossed for their fresh menu variety, you should expect to break out the wallet and wait a little while for your food.

I'm far too immature to eat at a salad place called "Tossed."
