Monday Moive Nights @ Domy Books
We're loving this monday night movie series at Domy. It gives us an excuse to get out of the house on a Monday night, and a reason to watch cheesy cult classics. All the more reason to love Domy Books.
Monday, August 6: "Forbidden Zone"
A chaotic musical fantasy. The story revolves around a family who unwittingly stumble into a gateway to the sixth dimension, wherein the denizens are caricatures of cartoon cutouts and vaudevillian send ups.
The film relies on strange, nearly nonsensical song and dance numbers. The set pieces look like a amalgamation of German expressionism and Betty Boop cartoons, and to top it all off it was filmed in black and white, strangely reminiscent of 1927's Jazz Singer.
Herve Villechaize, known for Tattoo on Fantasy Island, plays King Fausto of the Sixth Dimension. Susan Tyrell plays his Queen. Danny Elfman... could he really be anything other than the Devil, himself?!
Before Danny Elfman had mainstream success in the 80s from the weirdo rock band Oingo Boingo, he was a animal of a slightly different color. Along with brother Richard Elfman, they put together a musical theatre act well beyond its time called The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.
Toward the end of that act, there had been no serious recordings done, so in an effort to capture the spirit of the project, and slightly before it dropped most of its name to become simply Oingo Boingo, Forbidden Zone was created.
