Spitgate: Rockets' Alston's Side Of The Story

Rafer Alston is spitting mad. He was mad, he admits, Sunday night when he got into a shouting match with a downtown parking attendant who was threatening to tow his car. But what has the erstwhile "Skip To My Lou" pissed today is that he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor public intoxication and assault as a result of the confrontation. The arrest record accuses him of expectorating on the parking attendant and being drunk and beligerent with police.

KRIV (that's channel 26 to you) reports on Alson's account of the events. Mark Berman, who works harder than any other sportscaster in the city and should not be confused with this guy, got the quotes when other media outlets were unable to contact Rafer. Though it may take a while to sort out what really happened, those who were calling for Alston to be traded or released probably were jumping the gun.

Also telling is the statement by Rockets GM Daryl Morey:

While we do not have all the facts yet, it is nevertheless very disappointing to have one of our players involved with any police activity. We will continue working with the authorities in order to get to the bottom of the situation.

Translation: "Boy, are we glad this wasn't a felony." Still, the fact that the Rockets haven't suspended Alston in the wake of this incident (and the numerous other high-profile athlete arrests lately) would seem to indicate that he has the support of the organization. As usual, stay tuned to Houstonist for updates on this story.
