Daily-ist: Tuesday
Art Institute of Houston Poetry Forum Kickoff
Borders Books and The Art Institute of Houston offer a monthly Poetry Reading Series at Borders River Oaks, hosted by Ken Jones, instructor at The Art Institute of Houston.
The readings are the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Borders River Oaks at 3025 Kirby Drive at the corner of West Alabama. These monthly poetry events are free, open to the public, and part of an ongoing series sponsored by The Art Institute of Houston held the second Tuesday of every month. An Open Reading generally follows the featured readers.
Ken Jones has been a published poet for over 20 years in academic and underground journals, magazines, websites and other forums. He is a full-time faculty member at the Art Institute of Houston, teaching Creative Writing among other subjects.
On Tuesday, August 14, the Borders Poetry Reading Series kicks off with Beverly Montesier, founder of the Synergy Foundation, a non-profit educational arts foundation based in San Antonio.
This award-winning poet and activist from war-torn Cyprus has published poetry, essays, and articles internationally. Montesier will also be appearing at an on-campus reading at The Art Institute of Houston Library on Wed. August 15 at 2 pm in conjunction with the release of the 9th issue of The Keyhole, The Art Institute of Houston’s Poetry Journal.

Fix this sentence: Ken Jones has been (a) published poet for over (more than, not over) 20 years in academic and undersround (what is undersround? maybe underground) journals. (a comma right here, not a period) magazines, websites and other forums. He is a full-time faculty member at the Art Institute of Houston, teaching (lower case the subject, it's not a proper name or pronoun) Creative Writing among other subjects.
Houstonist, that is too many errors for a piece about a writer. Don't rush to print.
would you buy that we are just seeing if you are paying attention?? :-) and apparently you were!
thanks for the corrections!
yay for anal retentive pedants!
Speaking...err, writing...of being anal, it should be Daily-ist
geez, i quit. :-) just one of those days, ya know?
thanks to our readers for keeping us in check, otherwise we would be idoits. wait, idiots? :-)
Monica, we still love you!
Love,
The readers who don't care about your mistakes
Journalism is a craft, a skill and an art. You should care about "small" editorial mistakes. It can ruin the integrity of the publication. And it reflects on the editor. Most journalists go through many years of school and internship experiences to perfect their talents, and to bring you informative news. All that I'm saying is take your time before going to print. To err is human, but to have many issues in one paragraph is downright embarrassng. In no way am I trying to offend the writer, she is doing her job...I only wanted to bring attention to the lack of editing and style rules.
I know, right? They get paid WAY too much to make any kind of mistake!
To the anal-retentive guest commenter: you misspelled embarrassing. He who throws stones...
I guess everyone does have a bad day every once in a while.
to the person who loves repeating anal (either you are admitting your fetish or i guess you never got past that freudian stage?)
I did say to err is human; i'm not the editor for this publication. If i was, there would be far less errors. (take this to a j-school prof and they'll rip into most of these stories, but there is no need to take it that far).
and i agree...everyone does have a bad day. hope your anal day turns out to be a good one. :)
OK, everyone, be nice.
Guest (I'm talking to the one who knows AP style): You're exactly right about the errors, and we really appreciate your reading so carefully. Obviously, we could use a skilled copy editor; if you're interested in helping make Houstonist a better read on a regular basis, drop me a line. Of course, you'd only be paid in love — or, occasionally, beer. Not a bad combination.
Oh, don't take the quirky out of the ... WHAT? you're unpaid? ...er, blog-thingie.
I don't think it's an "out" ANONYMOUS guest. Just a reminder that we all do this out of a love for Houston/a need for the grand celebrity that comes with writing for Houstonist.
Jim: This is the guest with the AP skills. Thanks, but I've got a paying gig in the field. I just like reading other pubs, including Houstonist. And every so often I run into a piece that becomes a massacre (i see them in the chron everyday). I don't mean any harm to any writers doing their jobs. I just wanted to bring the errors to your attention. Keep up the interesting stories! However, you may want to think about giving a writing/editing test before you bring on a new writer.
Guest, it's an ongoing battle, as you know. But thanks again for the careful eye.
