Callaloo, among the top literary magazines in the country, is sending four writers (all faculty from Callaloo's Creative Writing Workshops) to read in Houston for one night only. Terrance Hayes, Mat Johnson, Tayari Jones, and Tracy K. Smith will give a public reading Thursday, August 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ensemble Theatre, located at 3535 Main Street.
These four writers have won more than a dozen national awards and fellowships; they are at the top of their field, and you can bet that this will be an excellent reading. In case you didn't know, Callaloo is the Who's Who of African-American and African Diaspora literature.
Callaloo was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and focuses on the literature and culture of the African Diaspora.
For thirty years, Callaloo has published creative and critical texts by a variety of artists and intellectuals writing in various languages throughout the world. In addition to publishing the work of visual artists, the journal has also identified, introduced, nurtured, encouraged, and promoted a variety of new and emerging writers, some of whom are now established artists and academics who have received prestigious awards for their books.
Recent special issues of the journal have focused on Hip-Hop music and culture, Afro-Mexican literature and culture, and Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans.
The reading will be followed by a reception and book signing. Special thanks go to Inprint and The University of Houston Creative Writing Program and the Ensemble Theater, who are co-sponsoring the event.
