"Creative Crowdsourcing Through Mobile Technolgy"
We couldn't have said it better ourselves, and you'll have to see this to believe the awesomeness of it. This has been on our radar for quite some time and we are so excited it's finally here.
The Houston Center for Photography and Aurora Picture Show band together this summer to present the 3rd annual summer SPIN Party and Exhibition Txt Me L8r on August 24 from 8-11pm.
On July 9, artists and the general public were invited through a special Houston Center For Photography and Aurora Picture Show E-news to sign up on a first-come first-serve basis to participate in this year’s SPIN exhibition. These artists, alongside another 24 pre-selected artists, received text message photography assignments sent throughout the month of August. Participants then responded to the assignments and upload their results to a photo-sharing site, which will then be video projected as slideshows in HCP's galleries.
Artists locations included: Houston, TX, Dinkesbühl, Germany, Portland, OR, Atlanta, GA, Denton, TX, New York, NY, Manhattan, NY, Montreal, Canada, Edinburgh, Scotland, Austin, TX, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, St.Petersburg, FL, Pittsburgh, PA, Los Angeles, CA, Brooklyn, NY, The Republic of Ghana, Baltimore, MD, San Diego, CA, Auckland, New Zealand and Fukuoka, Japan.
Co-curated by HCP and Aurora, Txt Me L8r explores the potential for distributed creativity through the use of cell phone technology. Combining crowdsourcing with networked communication, Txt Me L8r invites artists and the general public alike to adapt new technologies for spontaneous, geographically-dispersed collaboration.
This year’s SPIN party features cell phone imagery video projected in the HCP galleries, an open bar sponsored by Real Ale Brewing Company and music by sound artist Stephen Orsak. The exhibition will continue through August 26. Tickets are available at the door on the night of the event for $6 (HCP and Aurora members, students, and seniors) and $10 for the general public. Tickets are cash only.
The Txt Me L8r exhibition will remain on view at HCP August 25 and 26 from noon to 6pm. The HCP gallery is free and open to the public.
About SPIN
HCP has hosted its annual SPIN “friend-raiser” since 2005 when it partnered with Project Row Houses for an evening of “spinning” slides the old-fashioned way. Last summer HCP teamed up with Houston. It’s Worth It. for an unforgettable weekend of democratically displayed Houston imagery that answered the question, “What makes Houston worth it? Show us why!” Txt Me L8r exemplifies photography’s move into the 21st century with new media and technology.
