Yesterday, members of the Caribbean Impact Foundation, a local non-profit organization, stood before the International Liaison and Protocol Committee to request that the city name this week Caribbean Relief Week due to the devastating effects Hurricane Dean had on many Caribbean nations. The mayor issued the proclamation and encouraged Houstonians to do what they can to aid the relief work:
Houstonians have always shown a big heart in times of need, and I know they will want to help.
Residents of the Caribbean have suffered major damage to their homes, schools, infrastructure, hospitals, and agriculture. Organizers of the relief effort are asking Houstonians to donate the following items: non-perishable food, water, soap, disinfectant, mosquito repellent, flashlights, batteries, diapers for both seniors and infants, building and school supplies, crates, barrels, and monetary donations to help with the delivery of supplies abroad.
Monetary donations can be made through the Repairer of the Breach website or they can be made payable to the Caribbean Impact Foundation at any Chase Bank Location. Other items can be dropped off through September 3 at the following locations: South Park Baptist Church, the Shrine of the Black Madonna, RAPHA Village, and D&D Auto Salvage in Baytown.
