Restaurant Review: Frenchy's

090507_Frenchys2.jpgSometimes nothing satisfies a hunger pain like a big helping of fried chicken and fixin’s. But not just any fried chicken. We wanted the kind that didn’t come off a conveyor belt; chicken that’s been soaked, seasoned and fried with love. Perhaps a place where Rockets players can be found after practice. Frenchy’s more than fit the bill. The original store on Scott Street almost always has a line of hungry patrons waiting to place their order. Opened in 1969, Frenchy’s menu has changed over the years but the same deep South Creole flavors are bold in all their dishes. We opted for their famous spicy chicken – succulent, tender, juicy with a balanced blend of spices and a thin crispy exterior. Our taste buds could have used more kick to the spice-o-meter, but the juiciness of the meat more than made up for it. We could talk for hours about the chicken, but wait....there’s more. The sides almost steal the spotlight from the chicken. Here’s a brief run down. Red beans and rice – heavy on the beans, light on the rice, full in flavor with big chunks of Frenchy’s own sausage. Dirty Rice – perfect for the dirty south…chicken liver and gizzards with spices. Don’t be scurrrred, it’s good. Collard Greens – we can’t stop thinking about the collard greens. It was swimming in a pool of salty goodness from ham hock and bacon. If we could swim in a pool of this broth, we would in a heartbeat. No lifeguard needed. Other sides include potato salad, fries, etoufee, gumbo, pickled jalapeno peppers and biscuits and cornbread. To round out the meal, order a cobbler for the road. We had the peach cobbler. The pie crust on top was heavy on the butter, and we all know butter makes everything taste better. The peach filling had a slight cinnamon accent and a great firm texture. We can’t wait to go back and try their sweet potato pie. Is your mouth watering yet?

If you’ve never been to the original Frenchy’s, don’t expect cloth napkins and table service. In fact, don’t expect walls and finished floors. Frenchy’s is all about the food, so order at the window, find a picnic table under the “rustic” awning, or take it to go. And another tidbit to brighten your rainy days: Frenchy’s has expanded to five more locations in Houston. Our hearts fluttered with joy. Or was that just our artery clogging up?

Frency's has the BEST "fast food" fried chicken EVER. In the mid-'80's there were more locations and I was in heaven. The sides are fantastic!!! Yep, it's mo'bettah than the Popeye's

I'm literally salivating. It's kind of embarrassing.

Now I'm craving fried chicken, greens and sweet potato pie. Seriously craving.
