Friday Afternoon Videos: Cars

The song is simple, totally electronic, and very new wave, but we still love it. It's hard to believe that it's been 28 years since the release of "Cars" from Gary Numan. A Top 10 hit from 1980, it was a very left-field hit that year, sounding like nothing else you heard on the radio. We're happy that the YouTube poster included the lyrics to the song; we just now realized that for almost three decades, we've been singing the wrong words.

Gary Numan is considered a one-hit-wonder in the U.S., but he had several other hits over the past few decades in his homeland of England. The Foo Fighters covered his early 80's song "Down in the Park" several years ago, finally bringing it to light in North America. With his fashion and style, he was probably an inspiration to many Emo artists out there now.

While he's best known for this song, he's also known for his love of flying, which he pilots on a regular basis. He's not the most outgoing guy, either, struggling with a mild case of Asperger's Syndrome; nevertheless, he and his wife celebrated the arrival of their third child back in March. His name is Echo. Numan has never been a fan of normalcy.
