Houstonist Bites: Yo Mama's Soul Food

20070903_yomamasfood.jpgNext time you are in the mood for an extraordinary lunch that does not involve valet parking you should hop on over to Yo Mama's Soul Food Restaurant on Antoine between 43rd and Tidwell. Yo Mama's (tee hee) has been slanging the groceries for 13 years now will not be closing any time soon judging by the lunch crowd.

Folks from neighborhoods near (Oak Forest) and far (Sugarland) were waiting patiently in line to pick out soul food staples from the serving line. Main dishes include meatloaf, oxtails, smothered chicken and pork chops. Available sides are black eyed peas (Fergie not included), collard greens, stuffing and macaroni & cheese.

More about Yo Mama's after the jump.

Patrons ordering the regular plate must select a meat and three sides. Those opting for the Big Mama will get twice the meat to accompany their sides. Both meals come with a piece of cornbread. FYI, couples sharing the Big Mama will easily be filled by the ample portions. If not, smile. You've got room for dessert (think banana pudding).

Houstonist opted for meatloaf with collard greens, stuffing and black eyed peas. We would have scratched the stuffing in favor of the mac & cheese, but the M&C wasn't ready. What was initially deemed to be a crisis since we went there specifically in search of the cheesy goodness, turned out to be fortuitous. The stuffing was outstanding; it was moist without being mealy, and the texture was just right.

The folks we talked to were an even split between the entrees and the desserts as the best part of the meal. We are inclined to agree with the entree folks since we were too stuffed to attempt dessert. But, for us the crowning feature of lunch was our beverage - Kool-Aid Fruit Punch. Washing down a meal of collard greens and meatloaf with a swig of Kool-Aid swept us back to Sunday dinner at Maw Maw's house and nothing beats that.

Call ahead if you don't have time to wait in line. And, if you're heading there on Sunday, be sure to beat the church crowd by showing up no later than 12:30 PM. But beware, you may miss the mac and cheese.
