Tonight, the Tasting Room River Oaks joins two of our favortie things: art and wine. Not a novel concept, but a welcomed one on a rainy week in H-town.

The Tasting Room - River Oaks is proud to welcome winemaker Matt Steel from Green Point winery in Victoria, Australia and artist Robert Glick.

The Tasting Room is very happy to be displaying a number of Robert’s works in both the River Oaks and the Uptown Park locations.

‘Green Point’ is on a spur of land running from Yeringberg Hill to the Yarra river, in the heart of the Yarra Valley. It is the home of Domaine Chandon Australia, where Green Point sparkling and Green Point still wines are produced.

It is named ‘Green Point’ because in the 1850’s the early settlers of the Yarra Valley observed that, each year, as summer advanced and the grass turned straw colour, this property remained green longer than any other. The reason for this is that the ancient alluvial soils at Green Point are deep and therefore retain moisture well into the summer. These soils combined with the Yarra Valley’s cool climate, define a site with ideal ‘terroir’ for growing wine grapes.

Recently focused on creation, some works evoke images of God, religion, evolution and the origins of man. For example, to create the “Anthropology of God” suite, I wrote the six-stanza poem first; then integrated each stanza into the composition. The suite postulates how mankind’s perception of God may have evolved with language. Since perceptions cannot distinguish beyond observational capacity, I wanted to consider mankind’s interpretation of God from the animal perspective when challenged to define and communicate abstract concepts. The fifth panel is provocative because it regards a written name of God, requiring the ability to project concepts symbolically. It also refers to the mathematical properties of the Golden Ratio Phi, in which each new length grows out of the old in unchanged proportion, thereby mirroring itself.
