Flick: Ethan Hawke-a-thon

We promise that we're not Ethan Hawke groupies here at Houstonist. But don't blame you for thinking that given last week's Flick and this one. Hawke, Texan via Austin, hits the screen in a new film, The Hottest State, and a cult classic, Gattaca.

2007_the_hottest_state.jpgHe wrote the book; now Hawke is behind the camera to direct the film. Despite what you may be thinking, State deals with a young couple's romantic issues and not the climatological profile of Texas. William is an actor in New York. Sarah is a new arrival from Seattle. They meet in a bar. They date. They don't sleep together. They break up. Drama ensues.

The film, which opened in limited release a month ago, has garnered a mixed bag of reviews. Check out the film this Friday and make your own call.

The film premiers tonight in Austin and opens on Friday at Angelika.

20070919_mfah_gattaca.jpgMovies Houstonians Love kicks off next Monday with Gattaca. Mike Feinberg, founder of the KIPP Foundation, presents the sci-fi cult classic that was released in 1997 - the same year that The Hottest State was published. Eerie.

Gattaca examines the future of humanity in the context of genetics, ethics and black suits murder. Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, and former Mrs. Hawke, Uma Thurman, seem plausible as genetically engineered overachievers. But Alan Arkin steals the show as a detective investigating a murder.

The production design and cinematography present a world characterized by stark minimalism enabled by technology. However, the characters are clad in outfits that hearken back to the 1950's and scoot around in vehicles that evoke the 1960's. It's in a similiar vein as the Matrix films but crisper and cleaner.

P.S. We promise that we won't write up Training Day next week.
