Kenny & Ziggy's Deli: Coconut Cream Pie

092007_KennyZiggy.jpgStanding in front of Kenny & Ziggy's rotating dessert display case reminded us of a scene from Sex in the City. Carrie Bradshaw, a shoe zealot, presses right up to the glass of a window displaying designer shoes and says in her breathy voice, "Helloooo lov-ah."

This Jewish delicatessen has plenty of good eats, ranging from matzo balls to open-faced Reubens and the decor - yaddy yadda yadda...just go straight for the Coconut Cream Pie. It's not just dessert, it's a commitment. Arguably the best cream pie we've ever had, this confection requires some heavy lifting. The pie stands almost five inches tall and weighs about...er...as much as it takes to make one go "ooofff" when lifting the whole pie off the table. The crust was perfect and flaky. There was a nice thin layer of chocolate to keep the crust from getting soggy. We loved that the crust didn't try to upstage the coconut cream.

One bite was all it took for our eyes to roll to the back of our head. We needed to put our fork down and have a moment of silence. The custard was smooth and rich with a definitive coconut flavor - but not too sweet. We don't like pies that are too sweet so all you taste is the sugar instead of the ingredients. The cream on top was real fresh whipped cream and rounded out the flavors and textures. And the icing on the pie, if you will, was the layer of toasted coconut flakes. Perfection.

'Hello lov-ah' is right. Whew. We need a cigarette.
