Craig Biggio's final weekend as an Astros player will feature a particularly fun blast from the past. Biggio, who has played catcher, second base, and several outfield positions throughout his 20 year career in Houston, will catch the first two innings or so of Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. The original plan had called for Biggio to be matched with ace Roy Oswalt, but Oswalt is skipping his final start of the season so as not to risk injury.
Biggio began his career as a catcher, but it has been 15 years since he last crouched behind home plate. He was certainly no slouch as a backstop, earning All-Star honors at that position before becoming a second baseman to replace the departed Bill Doran in 1991.
If you tried to do something you hadn't done in 15 years, the results would likely be met with laughter at best and a trip to the hospital at worst; sensing this, Biggio prepared for Saturday by catching Brandon Backe's bullpen session on Wednesday in Cincinnati. Craig likely won't be nearly as good behind the plate as the stalwart Brad Ausmus, but he feels good about it so far.
This weekend will mark Biggio's final hurrah with the Astros. In honor of this event, the 'Stros will cycle through each of the four jersey styles worn by Biggio during his tenure with the team. The Braves series is sold out, but SRO tickets will be released on game days. Get down to Minute Maid Park and wish a Houston institution farewell.
