We told you about this event in this week's Thriftster, but decided it was waaaaaay to cool not to be reminded of again. I mean, would you seriously know what to do if we didn't tell you these things? Don't answer that. Unless the answer is "No."

This new concert series, co-sponsored by SugarHill Studios, is dedicated to showcasing musicians as original as the Orange Show monument itself. SugarHill has a rich history of supporting visionary recording artists, from the Big Bopper to Lightnin' Hopkins. By teaming up with this legendary studio, now in its 65th year of operation, the Orange Show gains expertise in producing superior shows in the unique and intimate amphitheater created by Houston postman Jeff McKissack over 25 years ago.

Tonight's concert series features Nina Nastasia & Jim White, and Houston's own Basses Loaded.

"Nina Nastasia's rare gift of a voice is and intimate, winged presence that is able to either freeze or melt your heart, that can powerfully soar and twist, or brush gently against you, suddenly summoning goosebumps."
With each release, Nina Nastasia earns further critical acclaim for the inventive songwriting she merges with a consistently haunting style. Having established a reputation as an incredibly instinctive and distinctive drummer, Jim White has played on albums and toured with acts including, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Beth Orton, The Boxhead Ensemble, Smog, Nick Cave, P.J. Harvey and countless others, yet this is the first record to bear his own name. Nina's long-time companion and musical organizer, Kennan Gudjonsson, developed and arranged the songs. Steve Albini recorded the album at Electrical Audio in Chicago.
"Jim White, the peerless drummer of beloved Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three," has an playing style that is "simultaneously loose and lithe, intensely tight" yet "testing and marking out the spaces around things."

100407_bassesloaded.jpgBasses Loaded consists of musicians from American Sharks, Tha F-ing Transmissions and The Kants. They are an art band, a concept put into performance. One of our favorite local music blogs,The Skyline Network, describes them best, as "a quartet that features not one, not two, but three bass guitars and a drummer. On lead bass is Ben (The F-ing Transmissions), Lee Walker (The Kants) on the middle bass, Mike Harden (American Sharks) on the low end and presumably synching up with at least one of the above is Mike McBike (The Kants, Ghettoblaster, Cop on Fire and about one million other bands)."
