The Axiom nightclub was only open for a short 5 years. But in that short time (from 1987 – 1992), many then-unknown rock bands performed at the venue, only to be headliners on large tours later. Of course, Nirvana is probably the most notable to make a stop at The Axiom in their early years, playing for a small crowd. Other bands that played at the club include Bad Religion, Dinosaur Jr., The Flaming Lips, The Jayhawks, Social Distortion, Uncle Tupelo, and even the Goo Goo Dolls (back in their rocking days ... yes, that was long before "Iris").
White The Axiom continued to host some punk/rock shows after 1992, the venue became better known as the home of Infernal Bridegroom Productions. Unfortunately, IFP ceased operations a few months ago.
The club, which was located at 2524 McKinney, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its opening. They decided to celebrate by bringing many of the bands that once played at The Axiom back to Houston, including Sprawl, The Cave Reverend, and Academy Black. Check out the full listing of bands. The party is divided into two nights at Fitzgerald’s: tomorrow and Saturday. Should be a great trip down memory lane.
