Oni-Con is Houston's original anime convention and it's held once a year. If you are not familiar with anime, please allow us to bring you up to speed.
Anime is a drawing and animation style that originated in Japan and has been popular in America for quite some time with shows such as Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. Maybe you've seen these animated shows on Cartoon Network late at night while channel surfing.
Another popular event at Oni-Con is cosplay. Cosplay is the combination of two words, costume and play. These are the folks you find on the internet (like the one to the right) dressed up as their favorite anime, comic book and movie characters.
When you combine these two things along with live art demonstrations, arcade games, live action simulated combat tournaments, merchandise booths, an artists gallery, the U.S. debut of Japanese rock band, Rentrer En Soi and much more you get what Oni-Con is all about. If any of that interests you, then head down to the George R. Brown Convention Center this weekend, October 19-21 and join thousands of other anime fans for a weekend of anime and cosplay.
Admission for Oni-Con ranges from free (6 and under) to $40 for a three day pass. Individual day passes are $25 for Friday and Saturday and $20 on Sunday. Click over to the official Oni-Con website for more details.
Don't forget your camera and bring plenty of cash to take home all those cool toys you've your niece and nephew have always wanted!
