New CD Releases: October 23, 2007

Lots of CDs are released week after week. And though we unwisely spend a bulk of our disposable income on music, Houstonist understands that you work hard for the money, honey! So every Tuesday, we'll bring you a list of CDs that we think will give you the most bang for your buck.

102307ryan.jpgRyan Adams and his band the Cardinals release an EP called Follow the Lights today, just months after the acclaimed full-length Easy Tiger hit the shelves. Don’t call it an early Christmas present yet; Follow the Lights only has two whole new songs on it. We think Adams junkies will still approve. By the way, did anyone catch Adams and the Cards at Verizon last week?

Country music princess Carrie Underwood releases Carnival Ride today. Expect more inspirational fare as well as Underwood’s incredible vocal range with this one.

Columbian megastar Juanes is back in a big way with La Vida es… un Ratico, or Life is Short. So much has changed since his 2006’s megahit Mi Sangre: Juanes has short hair again, and he also seems to have had his share of baby mama drama. We mainly love how he shreds on the album’s single, “Mi Enamora.”

We loved Say Anything’s irreverent debut, …Is a Real Boy. Now, lead singer Max Bemis and gang are back with In Defense of the Genre, and we're talking about some double-disc action here. They sound a bit more emo this time around, but we give them kudos for such an ambitious project.

- Buy In Defense of the Genre
- Buy tix to see Say Anything at the Verizon Wireless Theater on Nov. 9

Coheed & Cambria say that their new record, No World for Tomorrow, will be the end of the doomsday saga that their previous three albums tell.

And how fun does this sound? The Temptations have recorded pop standards for their latest, Back to Front. Any record where The Temptations take on Barry White and The Emotions is all right with us.

Thank goodness for the heads up about the Adams cd. I'm enough of a crazy completionist that I might've bought it; now I'll just iTunes the two new songs.

In their infinite wisdom, I'd be surprised if iTunes allows just the two new songs to be downloaded by themselves; they'll probably make it part of the "album only" issue that many people (including myself) wholeheartedly dislike.

In any event, I saw Ryan Adams last week and it was more than worth it. He and the cardnials are an incredible musicians and played for 2.25 hours. Verizon was the perfect venue to him in as well.

goal10der - absolutely agree. i thought the show as fantastic. musically and visually. never sure what to expect from the bratty, volatile Adams, but was glas he was in a joking mood, even making fun of himself.

the re-arrangements of songs such as bartering lines and let it ride were amazing. such a refreshing way to hear songs we've all heard a 1000 times before.
