Did you hear that Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Road Show is featuring The Big Lebowski at Copperfield Bowling Center? No? "Well, okay, you're not privy to all the new shit, so uh, you know, but that's what you [read Houstonist] for."
The Coen Brothers' follow up to Fargo, The Big Lebowski is the story of mistaken identity involving a slacker and a millionaire. Jeff Bridges stars as bowling slacker Jeffrey Lebowski (but everyone calls him The Dude). Mistaken for the other Jeffrey Lebowski, the millionaire, by thugs from the porn magnate, Duder gets roughed up, spills his half-and-half and watches as Woo pees on his rug, which really tied the room together. The story line follows El Duderino and his friends, Walter and Donny, as they try to unravel the rug pissing incident and in the process encounter the porn magnate, a feminist, some Nihilists and the Malibu Chief of Police.
The movie was a relative dud with movie goers and critics compared to Raising Arizona and Fargo but has become a cult classic resulting in fan produced Lebowski Fest. In its six years of existence, the Louisville-based festival (called The Annual by insiders) has enjoyed a surge in popularity that has seen satellite festivals take place in LA, NYC, Seattle, Vega$, Austin and The UK.
Saturday night's event may be the closest that Houston comes to getting it's own official Lebowski Fest so pull together a costume, and get yourselves a lane. Tickets are 20 "bones or clams or whatever you call them" and include admission for one to the movie, a game of bowling, shoe rental and a White Russian.
