Flick: Night of the Living Dead

20071031_Night_of_the_Living_Dead.jpgIt's been called "maybe the best movie ever made in Pittsburgh," but George Romero's classic, Night of the Living Dead, is considered by many to be the movie that set the standard for the horror film genre and influenced countless productions. Per Rex Reed:

If you want to see what turns a B movie into a classic...don't miss Night of the Living Dead. It is unthinkable for anyone seriously interested in horror movies not to see it.
Houstonist is not really a fan of horror movies per se, but we do love our classic films, and this one certainly is one for the ages despite some campiness.

The film tells the story of a mystical day in which the dead come alive and terrorize citizens in the Pennsylvania country side and the rest of the country, including "the Houston and Galveston area." The film opens as Johnny (Russell Streiner) and Barbra (Judith O'Dea) arrive at a rural cemetery to pay their respects to their dead father on behalf of their ailing mother. "They're coming to get you, Barbra. They're coming for you, Barbra," teases Johnny. And, one does - killing Johnny in the process.

Barbra flees from the incredibly slow moving creature (think of the steamroller in Austin Powers) and eventually escapes after a "running stumble" and a slow motion car crash. She holes up in a country house where she encounters six more "living" trying to stay safe from the undead. Will they survive? Will they kill each other in the process? Click through the jump to watch the movie and find out!

Need your own DVD to watch in the headrest of your Civic? No sweat. Romero's classic is now considered part of the public domain and is available for download for free. No strings attached.

And another thing: the "spring forward" Daylight Savings Time change happened on the same day as the zombie attack. Houstonist is gonna sleep with our shotgun under our pillow this Saturday night.
