Good morning, Houston. We admit that we have a thing for interview shows, so we thought we'd take a second to note that NBC's Meet the Press, the king of Sunday morning TV news, made its television debut 60 years ago today. Meet the Press began life as a radio show in 1945 and moved to TV a couple of years later, and it hasn't stopped since. Now, MtP is the longest-running show on American television — though we're sure Cavemen will one day give it a run for its money.
>> The black hole of traffic: We're used to seeing traffic backups in the Galleria area, but we have to admit that we can't remember hearing about one quite like this: On Monday, a hole developed in a freeway interchange and snarled traffic for hours. It happened on a ramp linking the southbound Loop 610 and the Southwest Freeway between noon and 1 p.m.; officials say chunks of concrete began falling from the roadway and continued until there was a hole in the ramp. The center lane of the ramp was closed, as were the eastbound lanes of Richmond Avenue under the ramp. Crews worked through the afternoon to patch the hole so the lane will be able to reopen soon, but it will close at 9 p.m. Friday for more permanent repair work.
>> Jackson Lee: Tear this school down: U.S. Rep Sheila Jackson Lee on Monday called on HISD to demolish and rebuild Key Middle School, saying that faculty and students' health problems leave no other solution. "I will be asking the school district for an inventory of mold throughout the district, but I'm asking for this contaminated school to be closed," Jackson Lee said. "I think this is a singular example of other school situations that maybe we the voting public are not even aware of." Since the health problems first surfaced earlier this fall, more than 80 percent of Key employees have filed claims; the campus was closed weeks ago, and in spite of the reports of illness, a series of investigators have found nothing conclusive that might be causing the problems. HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra didn't comment directly on Jackson Lee's statement, but said the district is committed to making sure students and employees are safe.
>> Today's weather: This morning's temperature is probably as warm as it's going to get today: We should see temperatures falling from near 70 into the lower 60s by the evening rush hour, then on into the 50s after dark. Look for a chance of rain before 3 p.m., with some clouds hanging around tonight.
