Nancy Kerrigan To Kickoff Holiday Season At Galleria

We've been seeing Christmas decorations going up around town earlier and earlier every year. This was the first time we could remember seeing green and red before Halloween. Still, retailers must remind people that it's almost time to go into debt in celebration of the birth of Jesus, so that's their right.

The Galleria is celebrating the lighting of their huge Christmas tree (and the attendant shopping rush) with a performance by former Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan and students from the Galleria's own Polar Ice skating school on Saturday. The iconic tree stands in the middle of the ice rink on the first floor of Galleria 1, and stands over 65 feet tall.

Galleria security has been told to keep a lookout for anyone who looks like they should be shopping at Dollar General instead of Saks, as they'd really like to avoid what happened last time. (C'mon. Like we weren't going to make that joke eventually.)

Other sites around town, including Uptown Park, City Hall, and others will wait until after Thanksgiving to officially turn on their lights, but as Houston's most prominent retail center, the Galleria has earned the right to be first. Or at least biggest.
